Product: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility Image
Vendor: Microsoft, provided AS-IS
Recommended for: Administrators, Developers

SUMMARY
Because Windows Installer is a database tool to install package(s), it retains information of a certain package installed with this technology. With Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, you can remove a program's Windows Installer configuration information. It provides a dialog box where you can select one or more programs that were installed by Windows Installer. The utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs, e.g. Registry settings of the package you selected.

Symptoms

Although Windows Installer is designed to be very robust, Windows Installer can become damaged if any of the following issues occurs:

  • Your computer's registry becomes corrupted.
  • You or someone else inadvertently changes a registry setting that is used by Windows Installer and that causes a problem.
  • The installation of a program that uses Windows Installer (for example, Microsoft Office 2000) is interrupted.
  • There are multiple instances of Setup running at the same time, or an instance of Setup is "blocked."

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does NOT remove Windows Installer itself, any cached file of the package (typically in %windir%/Installer) and files of any programs (such as <drive>\ProgramName Or <drive>\Program Files\ProgramName) that are installed by Windows Installer.

If you use this utility to remove the Windows Installer configuration information for your program and you plan to reinstall the program, you should reinstall the program in the same folder where you originally installed it. This prevents duplication of files on your hard disk or disks.

Usability

  • This tool best suits developers where they want to test a package for it's stability. They can troubleshoot certain windows installer properties of the package when they re-install the package and monitor the changes.
  • This tool is also advantageous for Administrators. If a user is having the above symptoms with a windows installer package, they can simply re-configure the package with re-installing the package and saving time for file and folder reinstalls (Windows Installer still checks and verifies the settings, files/folder and rest, it just saves time). There may be other purposes that you can "discover" on your own for what this tool can do for you.

Warning
The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility is provided "as is" to help resolve installation problems for programs that use Microsoft Windows Installer. If you use this utility, you may have to reinstall other programs. Caution is advised.
