Macrovision has released InstallAnywhere, version 8. Available in two editions - Standard and Enterprise, vendor claims some of the new features included are: 

  • Improved Accessibility — Create installations that are Section 508-compliant with new accessibility improvements including support for screen readers, high-contrast, and mnemonics
  • Migration Tools — InstallShield MultiPlatform users can migrate to InstallAnywhere 8 with the help of various migration tools and services
  • FLEXnet Connect Integration — Include FLEXnet Connect ™ with the installation to communicate updates and other critical information to your end users
  • InstallAnywhere Collaboration — Reference Developer Installation Manifest (DIM) files created with the new InstallAnywhere Collaboration module.

What is InstallAnywhere?
InstallAnywhere is the solution of choice for multiplatform software developers to package a product. A developer does not have to package different distribution versions of a product for different operating systems using InstallAnywhere. Product makes use of Java bytecode that is independent of operating system differences. Since major operating systems today come with a Java, one InstallAnywhere-packaged Java-based product will install on any of the systems.

Windows 64-bit, SUSE 10.1, Mac OS X for Intel, Red Hat (Itanium 64 & AMD-64), RedHat Enterprise 4.0, SUSE 9, Solaris 10, RedHat Enterprise Server 3.0, Itanium 2 for Windows, Windows 2003, RedHat 9, Windows (98, Me, 2000, NT, XP), Solaris (SPARC & Intel), Linux (RedHat, Caldera, TurboLinux, and others), HP-UX, AIX, Mac OS X, z/OS, OS/390, NetWare, Compaq Tru64, other Unix platforms

InstallAnywhere was acquired by Macrovision on 2005 from Zero G. A similar product, InstallShield Multiplatform was also acquired by the company with it's acquisition of InstallShield Software Corporation in 2004. Macrovision plans to end InstallShield Multiplatform and assemble all features into InstallAnywhere making it a very powerful multiplatform installation authoring tool.
